FROM RURAL ROOTS TO ACADEMIC DISTINCTION: NICHOLAS ANNAN, FIRST KIPHART-EDUFUL SCHOLAR, GRADUATES SUMMA CUM LAUDE

What began as a bold dream for the future of underserved communities has now flourished into a remarkable success story. Nicholas’s journey is a powerful testament to the transformative power of opportunity. His academic path began in the humble classrooms of the Mansokwaa Kiphart Community School in the Central, where potential often outweighs resources. Mansokwa School was built with the Support of the Kiphart Foundation and it is located in the environs of Agona Bobikumah in the Agona West Municipality of the Central Region of Ghana.

Despite his stellar performance in his Senior High School examinations, the dream of a university education seemed a distant reality, nearly curtailed by financial constraints that saw him helping on his family's farm.

Discovered by the FASUL team in 2020, Nicholas’s plight and his undeniable brilliance became the catalyst for hope. FASUL provided immediate support for his university application, but the larger challenge remained. In response, the Kiphart-Eduful Scholarship was conceived and launched in 2022, a landmark initiative funded by the Kiphart Family Foundation (KFF) and supported by the Center for Innovation in Global Health (CIGH) at the University of Chicago which is headed and directed by Professors Funmi and Sola Olopade of the Biological Sciences Division of the University of Chicago. Named in honor of the philanthropist Richard ‘Dick’ Kiphart and FASUL’s founder, Peter Eduful, both of blessed memory, the scholarship was designed to shatter financial barriers for brilliant, needy students. Nicholas Annan became its first beneficiary.

The investment in his potential yielded extraordinary returns, Nicholas’s four-year degree program was a masterclass in dedication and excellence. His academic prowess was consistently recognized, earning him a place on the Department of Economics’ Honor List in 2024. His relentless pursuit of knowledge was further honored with an Academic Excellence Award in 2025, cementing his status as a top-tier scholar.

Culminating this remarkable journey, Nicholas graduated as the, third-best student out of 250 graduates in the Economics Department’s Class of 2025. This exceptional achievement did not go unnoticed in his department. In a move that speaks volumes about his depth of understanding and intellectual capability, Nicholas has been selected by his academic tutor to serve as a Teaching Assistant, a role reserved for the most distinguished graduates.

“Nicholas’s story is the very essence of why FASUL and our partners exist,” said a representative from the organization. “He embodies the brilliance that lies dormant in rural communities, waiting only for a chance to shine. His success is not just his own; it is a beacon for every child in Mansokwaa and beyond, proving that their dreams are valid and achievable.

Looking forward, Nicholas’s ambitions know no bounds. Inspired by his journey and driven to give back, he has set his sights on pursuing graduate studies at world-renowned institutions, with aspirations for a Master's degree and a PhD, aiming to become an economist of international repute.

The graduation of Nicholas Annan is more than an academic milestone; it is a validation of a collaborative vision shared by FASUL, the Kiphart Family Foundation, and the University of Chicago’s Center for Innovation in Global Health. It is a powerful reminder that when we invest in human potential, we unlock a future of infinite possibilities.

Congratulations, Nicholas! The FASUL family is immensely proud of you.
