As part of FASUL’s educational interventions, beginning in 2022, it has instituted a scholarship scheme aimed at supporting needy but brilliant students from KCS across Ghana, known as the Kiphart-Eduful Scholarship (KES). The scholarship is named after the Philanthropist, Richard ‘Dick’ Kiphart of Chicago and FASUL’s founder, Peter Eduful, both of blessed memory. Through Richard and Suzie Kiphart’s support, Peter Eduful founded FASUL in 2005.

Since 2005, FASUL has constructed a total of seven low-resource schools in underserved communities across the two regions (Ashanti and Central Regions) FASUL operates within. Other educational interventions the organization has undertaken include the construction of school toilets, boreholes, computer laboratories, and solar-powered computer labs, as well as providing libraries and other teaching and learning materials in schools in these underserved communities. The Kiphart-Eduful Scholarship is, therefore, another important milestone FASUL has crossed together with its international partners, namely, the Kiphart Family Foundation (KFF) of Chicago, the Center for Global Health (CGH) of the Biological Sciences Division and the Kiphart Center for Global Health and Social Development (KCGHSD) of the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy and Practice, both at the University of Chicago.

Nicholas Annan’s dream of pursuing higher education was given a shot in the arm after becoming the first recipient of the scholarship. A former student of the Mansokwaa Kiphart Community School in the Central Region, Nicholas’ dream was nearly curtailed when, despite his excellent performance in the final Senior High School Examinations, had to settle to help his parents on their farm in the village until the FASUL team chanced upon him during their operations in the Mansokwaa Community in 2020.

After becoming aware of his plight and knowing about his excellent performance as well as his financial predicament, FASUL supported him by providing the funds for a university admissions application form. After admission, his financial status remained unchanged, making it difficult for him to pursue his education with a peaceful mind. Having met several such situations in its operations, FASUL proposed the idea of establishing such a scholarship scheme to the international partners, particularly the Kiphart Family Foundation and CGH which was approved with funding from the KFF starting from the 2022/2023 academic year. The scholarship package includes payment of school fees, accommodation fees, a monthly stipend, a computer, and other learning materials, among others.

The scholarship is tailored to former KCS students who are entering or already studying in, tertiary institutions in Ghana. Each year two such scholarships will be awarded to, preferably, one boy and one girl at the undergraduate level. Priority will be given to students studying science, engineering, medicine, mathematics, or technology-related programs.Nicholas, who dreams to become a top economist of international repute, with a sigh of relief expresses his profound appreciation to FASUL, the Kipharts and CGH. And indeed, his dreams know no bounds. After he graduates from the KNUST, he hopes to pursue a Master’s at the University of Chicago and a PhD at Harvard!
